Zur Vienna Design Week zeigt sich das T/abor – Raum für Kunst und Kollaboration, in seiner Architektur – in der Arbeit der Künstlerin Petra Gell. Der flexible gemeinschaftlich und vielseitig genutzte Arbeits-, Werk-, Produktions- und Ausstellungs-Raum T/abor wird für Petra Gell künstlerisches Material.

Petra Gell fasziniert die Wirkung von Architektur auf die Wahrnehmung von Architektur. Sie nimmt Raum aus der distanzierten Wahrnehmung der Architekturfotografie kommend in den Blick, arbeitet nun direkt im Raum, mit Architektur als Bild. Ihre Materialwahl von Karton, über Bleistift bis zu Millimeterpapier verstärken den Eindruck der architektonischen Skizze. Über den Bildrand hinaus entführen Linien, geometrische Flächen und Farben in den malerisch erweiterten Raum. Dabei mischen sich Techniken der Malerei mit Grafik, CoIlage und Installation.

Mit wenigen Linien strukturiert sie Raum. Mit Farbe akzentuiert sie Tiefe wo Fläche war, gibt Boden, Wand und Decke Temperaturen. Mit Baustoffen, Klebeband und Bleistift eignet sie sich Räume an. Gewöhnliche Gegenstände, die Zimmer einer Wohnung, sogar ein Büro werden so zum Bestandteil ihrer Kunst. Wo hier die Grenzen zwischen Malerei, Design und Architektur verlaufen liegt im Auge der Betrachtung. Und eben das Ausloten dieser Grenzen manifestiert sich im spielerisch konstruktiven Zugang der Künstlerin.

Meine Überlegung, euch in einer Ausstellung zusammenzubringen, fußt im Wesentlichen auf der Beobachtung, dass eure Arbeitsweisen formale Ähnlichkeit aufweisen: Ihr beide experimentiert mit Formen und Farben, um teils temporäre, teils bleibende Strukturen zu bauen. In dem Hinzufügen, der Überlappung, dem Nebeneinander und Miteinander teils konträrer Materialien (zum Beispiel Stoff, Karton, Holz, Acryl, Sprühlack, Papier, Tape, Schaumstoff, Holz und vieles mehr) schafft ihr Kunstwerke, die von einer außergewöhnlichen Stimmigkeit gekennzeichnet sind, die an utopische Architekturen erinnern, an Schaufenster-Displays oder an bunte Puzzlespiele aus der Kindheit. Ihr habt beide Malerei studiert und verfolgt doch eher experimentelle Ansätze; zumindest gehen eure Arbeiten weit über die klassische Malerei – Farbe auf Leinwand – hinaus. Ich würde sagen, euer Gebrauch von Farbe ist – neben vielen anderen Aspekten – vor allem ein Ausdruck räumlichen Denkens und eines ästhetischen Gefühls, eines Wohlgefallens an farblicher und formaler Harmonie.

HOW TO MAKE A BEE LINE

The residency and exhibition project How to make a bee-line tests the artistic and interpersonal approach of two artists unfamiliar with each other: Elma Riza & Petra Gell.

What both artists have in common is their desire to make the different layers of a place visible through artistic interaction, to expose historical events, but also to create new spaces that do not necessarily have a function, free and open spaces for encounters and experiments with visitors and curious passers-by.

By means of Performance and Instant Composition, the Franco-Tunisian artist Elma Riza explores the relationship between body and space, focusing in particular on the tension between the visible and the invisible, the real and the imaginary. Like Elma Riza, the Viennese artist Petra Gell also creates spatial guidelines. In Elma Riza’s work it is often the movement of her own performing body that she marks with wool thread or tape. Petra Gell, on the other hand, draws lines that define relations between things and new spaces, using pencil, brush, monochrome and painted surfaces, as well as found materials. An eminent oscillation between two- and three-dimensionality lies in the resulting interventions, which in turn creates spatial illusion.

ELMA RIZA is a Franco-Tunisian artist, born in France in 1986, who has lived and worked in Berlin since 2007 in the field of visual arts and performance. Graduated from the Berlin School of Fine Arts – KHB in 2012. By means of Performance and Instant Composition, Elma Riza explores the relationship between body and space, focusing in particular on the tension between the visible and the invisible, the real and the imaginary.

PETRA GELL is an Austrian artist, born in Linz in 1976. Since 2001 she has participated in international exhibitions and curatorial activities. Graduated in Painting and Graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2006, Petra Gell’s installation work explores, in the era of fake news and virtual reality, the durability of the material and the meaning of objet trouvés in the real exhibition space.
